American Academy Of Arts And Sciences Induct Questek's Chief Science Officer

Dr. Gregory P. Olson, Sc.D., QuesTek Innovation LLC’s Chief Science Officer and company co-founder, was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on October 6, 2012.

Of the 220 inductees inducted into the Academy in 2012, he was one of only nine within the Engineering Sciences and Technologies section. Greg is also a Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, where he teaches, leads an active group researching computational materials design, and directs the Materials Technology Laboratory/Steel Research Group.

The Academy cited Dr. Olson as the “father of materials design” and for his many achievements:  pioneering the field of computational design of materials as dynamic multiscale systems (integrating the disciplines of materials science, applied mechanics, and quantum physics); co-founding QuesTek in 1997 in order to commercialize materials design services and computationally-designed materials; founding the Steel Research Group research consortium in 1985; creating the first undergraduate course in computational materials design; and co-founding many initiatives in design education at undergraduate and graduate levels.

The application of integrated computational, experimental and digital data tools has been identified as a key element of the Materials Genome Initiative, part of the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership announced by U.S. President Obama on June 24, 2011. More information about the field of integrated computational materials engineering (or ICME) is available at http://www.questek.com/technology.html.

Greg commented “Rapidly designing valuable new materials accelerates our ability to address society’s greatest needs, challenges and opportunities. I’m honored that the Academy recognized my efforts to establish this field, working with colleagues at QuesTek, industry, government and academia. This recognition comes at an exciting time at QuesTek, as I take a one-year entrepreneurial sabbatical leave from my academic work to further advance QuesTek’s industry leadership.”
