Minerals Technologies Expands Nano-Precipitated Calcium Carbonate Manufacturing Operations

Minerals Technologies Inc. announced today that it has completed Phase I of the 10,000-ton expansion of its production line for ultrafine Specialty precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) at the company's Adams, Massachusetts, facility, and that Phase II of the expansion will be completed by the first quarter of 2014. Specialty PCCs are used in non-paper end products like food, pharmaceuticals, sealants and adhesives.

"We are expanding our manufacturing facility at Adams to respond to the growing needs of our customers," said Robert S. Wetherbee, chief executive officer. "When the second phase is completed we will have increased ultrafine U. S. Specialty PCC production at Adams by 35 percent."

Minerals Technologies' ultrafine PCCs range in particle size from 60 nanometers (0.06 microns) to 150 nanometers (0.15 microns) in median particle size. Minerals Technologies has been producing nano-PCCs for more than 25 years. The company's tightly controlled precipitation process produces ultrafine PCCs that are uniform in shape, size and particle size distribution. The company markets its ultrafine PCCs in the United States under the names Thixo-Carb® PCC and Ultra-Pflex® PCC. The company also manufactures ultrafine PCCs at its operation in Lifford, United Kingdom, under the brand names of Calofort® PCC and Multifex-MM® PCC.
