Kilopower Nuclear Fission Electricity Production System Wins 2013 R&D Magazine 100 Award

The Northrop Grumman Corporation joint venture National Security Technologies, LLC (NSTec) team at the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Nevada National Security Site, received an R&D Magazine's 2013 R&D 100 Award. The award recognizes a variety of technologies created by researchers, scientists and engineers from throughout the nuclear security enterprise.

Kilopower research was the joint entry submission by NSTec, Los Alamos National Laboratory and NASA Glenn Research Center. Kilopower uses a nuclear fission system as a heat source that transfers heat via a heat pipe to a small stirling-engine-based power converter to produce electricity from uranium. With Kilopower, it's possible for NASA and other government and industrial organizations to continue developing probes and spacecraft for the exploration of deep space.

"It's a great accomplishment for our team to receive one of this year's R&D 100 Awards," said Raymond J. Juzaitis, president of NSTec. "Our scientists and engineers who developed this award-winning technology are keeping our nation at the forefront of innovation and assuring the continued exploration of space."

R&D Magazine presents the awards annually to the best technological advances at universities, private corporations and government laboratories around the world. The R&D 100 Awards are recognized as the "Oscars of innovation" and have also been called "the Nobel Prizes of technology." The winning teams will receive their awards in November in Orlando, Fla.

Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions in unmanned systems, cyber, C4ISR, and logistics and modernization to government and commercial customers worldwide.
