The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has published its latest Good Practice Guide, Co-ordinate measuring machine task-specific measurement uncertainties, and developed an accompanying training course, CMM Verification to ISO 10360.

The guide discusses the different techniques available to determine the measurement uncertainty associated with co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
The measurement of size, shape, form and texture is fundamental to controlling the quality and efficiency of manufactured goods. Hundreds of thousands of measurements are made every year to check that components meet specification, and many are made using CMMs.
The result needs to have an associated measurement uncertainty and this guide aims to provide sufficient information to enable a metrologist to interpret the requirements of the international standard relating to CMM uncertainty.
In addition to the CMM Good Practice Guide, NPL will be running a supportive CMM Verification to ISO 10360 training course to consolidate understanding of verification techniques and good practice. The one-day training event will include technical presentations and laboratory demonstrations to illustrate key issues, subtleties and common mistakes.
