Samsung Electronics, a global leader in innovation in consumer electronics and IT technology, announced the opening of its first Canadian R&D Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia

"Our new Canadian Samsung R&D facility is creating jobs in British Columbia, a hub for technology innovation," said HT Kim, President and CEO of Samsung Canada. "With a skilled Canadian talent base to draw from, the team will help Samsung continue to lead the industry - both at home and abroad - by driving product innovation."

Operations at the Samsung R&D Institute Canada began in 2013. The announcement of the facility coincides with B.C. Premier Christy Clark's trade mission to Asia, where she will visit Korea. Today, the Canadian facility employs approximately 60 skilled software engineers, designers and operations staff. As Samsung expands its R&D facilities throughout the world to provide leading mobile experiences for customers, the Samsung R&D Institute Canada will support the global design, development, operation and technical support of Samsung enterprise security solutions.

"We welcome Samsung's investment in B.C., and interest in Vancouver. Companies like Samsung are investing here because they recognize the advantages," said Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia. "A highly-educated talent pool, competitive tax policies, a business-friendly climate and AAA credit rating speak for themselves."

To fuel its innovation, Samsung invests heavily in R&D globally, in 2012 employing 67,000 and spending US $10.8 billion on the development of future technologies. The new Canadian Samsung R&D Centre complements Samsung's 33 R&D centres worldwide, including in the UK, U.S., China, Russia, India, Japan, Israel and China.
