Axalta Coating Systems, a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, was granted the Outstanding Environmental Technology Award at the 2014 China Surface Engineering Summit (CSES) in Shanghai, China. The technology recognized for its contribution to environmental sustainability is Axalta’s Lean and Green Coating System. The award recognizes Axalta’s leadership in developing surface treatment solutions that meet industry’s evolving demands for high performance and sustainable coatings.
The Lean and Green Coating System for OEMs includes the company’s Eco-Concept primer-less coatings, a high solid solvent-borne 3-Wet coating system and a waterborne 3-Wet coating system each of which can deliver full layer performance with a simplified coating process. Available for different customer requirements, all three systems can reduce application and bake steps in OEM coating application. The results for automobile manufacturers include improved productivity, lowered emissions of volatile organic compounds, reduced energy consumption and lower investment costs, while still achieving a high quality finish on vehicles.
Taking place in Shanghai from March 20th to 21st, the CSES 2014 is a prestigious industry event, featuring speakers from important organizations such as the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES), the International Surface Coatings Association of China (ISCAC), the China Coating Industry Association (CCIA), and the China Surface Engineering Association (CSEA).
In keeping with the theme of CSES 2014’s program, “Facilitating Automotive Industry Application, Strengthening Green Workshop Development,” exhibitors showed off their achievements in automobile coating products and technologies. CSEA 2014 also attracted participants from some of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers including BMW®, Mercedes Benz®, GM®, Volvo®, Volkswagen®, Ford® as well as other coatings suppliers.
The Outstanding Environmental Technology Award was presented by Mr. Huang Xiaoou, the President of CSEA. Jay A. Kaiser, Product and Technology Director for Axalta Coating Systems, Asia Pacific, said, “We are very proud to receive this award. It is a significant recognition of our commitment to meet our customers’ needs for sustainable coating solutions and provide environmentally responsible products.”
Axalta’s global network of seven R&D facilities is dedicated to enhancing its Lean and Green Coating System portfolio of products for its automobile OEM and refinish customers in China and around the world. The coatings can also be used by commercial vehicle manufacturers who are involved in painting complex shapes like trailers, truck lifts, built-on cranes and truck and trailer bodies.
Axalta’s Lean and Green Coating System is designed to meet European and North American environmental regulations. “China’s automotive industry is increasingly looking for low-VOC surface treatments that don’t compromise on performance,” explained Mr. Kaiser. “Fully aligned with the government’s green coatings initiative, our ability to innovate has enabled us to develop products that have come to be relied upon by our customers in China who need coatings that meet local and international VOC regulations and provide a beautiful finish at the same time,” said Mr. Kaiser.
Axalta’s global strategy focuses, in part, on expanding its capacity of waterborne production. Earlier this year, Axalta broke ground on construction of a new waterborne production facility in Shanghai. In addition, Axalta recently announced it will build a next-generation waterborne production facility in Germany and also expand waterborne production capacity at its operations center in Brazil.
Axalta is a high-technology coatings company backed by more than 146 years of product innovation. This institutional knowledge has helped Axalta maintain its role as a leader in the development of innovative coating systems. In addition to the new Shanghai waterborne facility, Axalta has a plant in Changchun and a second Shanghai facility, five powder coating facilities operated in collaboration with joint venture partners, a R&D Global Color Lab, an Asia Pacific Innovation Center in Shanghai and a new Asia Pacific head office, also in Shanghai.
