Alcoa have just approved plans for the construction of the 322,000 ton, Fjaroaal aluminium smelter in East Iceland.
The plants is scheduled to be operational in 2007 and will cost Alcoa approximately $1.1 billion over the next 4 years. It also represents the most extensive single investment in Iceland’s history and has been designed to be the most environmentally friendly aluminium smelter in the world.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in 2005. The facility will generate about 750 jobs, of which 450 will be associated directly with the plant and some 300 more will be associated with service related industries.
Alcoa claims that the facility will be the most environmentally friendly aluminium smelter ever built. Some design aspects that will be incorporated include: onsite disposal of spent pot linings; possible zero water discharge from the plant; carbon anodes will not be manufactured on site reducing emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NO2) and hydrocarbons; and compliance with all air and water quality standards set out by European Union directives scheduled for implementation in 2005 and 2010.
