New Agreements with Asian Displays Manufacturers Signify Increasing Interest for SmartKem’s Semiconductors

UK-based SmartKem Ltd has signed Letters of Intent (LOI) with two leading Asian displays manufacturers marking significant advances in the development of its market leading tru-FLEX® semiconductor technology. The agreements signify increasing interest for SmartKem’s semiconductors, with Asian manufacturers collaborating to drive manufacturing, integration and commercialisation of organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) technology in the flexible electronic display market.

The intention of these agreements is to transfer tru-FLEX® technology into existing Asian production lines once process feasibility has been established. SmartKem will work closely with its Asian display partners to accelerate technology transfer processes to ensure 100% compatibility, and full integration.

These LOIs will allow SmartKem to implement and industrialise tru-FLEX® into the production lines of leading display manufacturers, providing them with the opportunity to create leadership in the field of flexible displays. tru-FLEX® provides a viable platform for next generation displays and can be easily integrated into existing production lines, replacing like-for-like traditional competitive technologies such as amorphous silicon (a-Si). Furthermore tru-FLEX® technology can be processed at room temperature, without the need for cleanrooms and vacuum equipment, providing a clear path to low-cost display production.

“This is a truly exciting time for SmartKem. The signing of these LOIs in Asia will allow SmartKem to gain significant traction for the tru-FLEX® platform in one of our key geographies; and a global hub of the electronics sector. We are excited to develop new flexible display applications and next generation technologies in partnership with our new associates,” commented Steve Kelly, Founder and CEO of SmartKem. He continued: “This comes at a time when our global footprint is ever expanding, with our first Asian office due to open in Hong Kong later in 2015 alongside a dedicated Asian technical support team.’’

SmartKem’s tru-FLEX® platform has gained global interest due to its unique scientific properties, that give it a competitive edge. The advanced tru-FLEX® solutions provide electronics manufacturers with a route to exciting new applications in the flexible and foldable smartphone, smartwatch and wearable markets.
