Peel Back Heat-Sealed Food Lids Without Strain

Lloyd Instruments, a market leader in the field of materials testing instruments, has developed a fixture specifically to test the peel strength of heat sealed plastic film covers on food containers.

The Peel Fixture fits the company’s food texture analyzer and single column testing machines, and is designed to help both food and packaging industries develop quality seals on food containers to the benefit of end users.

This precision engineered fixture consists of a small upper spring loaded wedge grip to hold the film cover and a horizontal sliding bed with a “dish holder”.

A vacuum system is used to grip the food container securely into position. This advance capability not only ensures accurate results and data reproducibility, but also safety during testing.

The current peel testing system handles containers measuring 120 mm (4.724 in) in diameter; however additional holders may be designed to accommodate containers of other shapes and dimensions.

The Peel Fixture was designed specifically for a major international food production company. It has 500 N (112 lbs) force capacity and fits easily onto the company’s TA1 texture analyzer or LS series of low force universal testing machines.
