New Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesives from Dow Corning for Medical Device Applications

Dow Corning has launched its new series of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) at MD&M West 2016. The new Dow Corning® MG-2XXX Series of four PSAs have superior strength and adapt to medical devices used for prolonged periods without sensitizing or irritating the skin. The PSAs provide high permeability to water vapor and gas, thus enabling them to be suitable for various medical applications requiring increased aeration. These high-performance adhesives are displayed at Dow Corning’s booth.

An in depth portfolio of the company’s chief silicone technologies is also available to portray that customers are offered with a wide variety of choices for designing unique medical devices.

Our new Dow Corning MG Series complements and extends our industry-leading portfolio of medical device adhesives, offering customers unparalleled choice in properties and performance. Our proven silicone chemistry can help increase patient comfort and protection by overcoming drawbacks of traditional adhesive materials. These unique formulations will help manufacturers create the next generation of medical device technologies.

The newly developed PSAs are appropriate for medical device applications in need of firm adhesion to the skin. The application areas include monitoring devices, external prosthetic devices, ostomy appliances, hairpieces, drapes, and surgical dressings. The PSAs are available in a wide variety of solvent types, tack and peel adhesion values, and solid contents to fulfill specific processing parameters and application demands. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations for non-clinical lab studies (21CFR58) have approved all the four grades of PSAs as they have passed biocompatibility testing for skin sensitization, skin irritation and cytotoxicity.

The standard roll coating equipment can be used to process Dow Corning® MG-2502 and Dow Corning® MG-2402 Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesives for solvent-based systems. The standard hot melt coating equipment can be used to apply Dow Corning® MG-2410 Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesive. The Dow Corning® MG-2401 Silicone Adhesive grade is specifically designed for applications wherein liquid adhesive is sprayed or brushed onto the skin.

Dow Corning has over six decades of experience in both the manufacturing and marketing of silicone materials for medical applications. With scientific knowledge, global presence and regulatory experience, the company encourages customers to invent novel designs for medical devices by using liquid silicone rubbers, tubing, adhesives, and silicone elastomers.
