Siemens to Equip New Wide Hot Strip Rolling Mill in India

Siemens has received an order from Bhushan Steel and Strips Ltd., New Delhi, India, to supply all the electrical and automation systems for a new wide hot strip rolling mill which is to be built. The order includes the drives, the entire basic and process automation as well as the visualization system. Production is scheduled to start in 2008.

In Meramandali in the Indian federal state of Orissa, Bhushan Steel and Strips Ltd. (BSSL) is currently building an integrated steel plant which is to produce up to three million tonnes of steel per year. With the new wide hot strip rolling mill, BSSL, which already produces cold-rolled and coated strip, will be able to round off its value chain. The new mill will roll hot strip in thicknesses of between 1.4 to 25 millimeters and a maximum width of 1.680 millimeters. The plant will be designed for an annual production of three million tonnes in the first construction stage. The second construction stage will consist of an upgrade to 4.5 million t/a.

Siemens is supplying all the electrical equipment, all the drives, the basic and process automation from the furnace to the coil conveyor including all technological control systems and process models for strip dimensions and temperatures. The synchronous motors of the main drives for the roughing and finishing mills will be supplied with power via DC link converters. For quality assurance purposes, the microstructure monitor developed by Siemens will be used. This will enable important key characteristics of the material to be determined online during the rolling process. An easy-to-use HMI system with integrated process and plant diagnostic functions will facilitate operation of the plant and ensure rapid detection of any malfunctions, providing the basis for high plant availability. The integrated solution to be used at BSSL is based on the Siroll HM automation concept for hot rolling mills.

Siemens will also provide customer training, monitor installation of all the supplied components and systems and commission the installation, including fine adjustment of the technological models and control systems.

Bhushan also intends to roll a mix covering HSLA (high-strength low-alloy steel), double and multi-phase steel grades as well as stainless steel in this hot rolling mill. One of the main reasons why the order was awarded to Siemens was the latter's ability to come up with a solution that is able to cope with the whole range of products in respect of the models and control systems required.
