Tyre manufacturer Michelin are taking a new range of tyres to Barcelona for the next round of the Formula 1, to be held in Barcelona this weekend. The tyres feature the same construction as previously used tyres but utilise compounds that have never yet been used on race weekends.
These tyres will be available to Michelin’s partner teams including the McLaren Mercedes which currently lead both the constructors and drivers championships.
While the tyres have never before been used under race conditions, they have undergone extensive research, development and testing. The choice of tyres has been supported by the teams.
Tyre selection will be extremely important as the Circuit de Catalunya features a long main straight and a number of fast corners that place large strains on the tyres. Added to this is the abrasive nature of the track surface.
While the battle between Formula 1 teams and drivers is often the most high profile, the tussle between tyre manufacturers certainly does not take a back seat. The success of the new Michelin compounds will be found out this Sunday.
