World's Largest Stainless Plant Inaugurated

Avesta Polarit inaugurated its 3-year project that resulted in the creation of the worlds largest and most modern stainless steel facility. The project was capitalised to the tune of approximately 1 billion Euros.

The expansion project effectively doubles the capacity of Avesta Polarit’s operation at Tornio in Finland. The same site where they began their stainless operations back in the 1970’s.

Included in the upgrade are a new melting shop, expanded hot rolling facilities and a new cold rolling plant. The new melting shop increases capacity by 1 million tones, taking the plants total capacity to 1.65 million tones. Cold rolling capacity has also been expanded from 500,000 tonnes to 1,200,000 tonnes, with the installation of the new cold rolling RAP (rolling, annealing and pickling) line.

More work is currently under way with expansions to the hot rolling facilities, which will see its capacity increased to 1.7 million tonnes. These upgrades are due for start up in the third quarter of next year.

The bold expansion project provides an excellent base for diversification and growth, as well as enhancing the company’s competitiveness.
