City of Akron Trials Polymer Bridge

The US city of Akron is evaluating a new polymer pedestrian bridge as an alternative to more conventional steel constructions. The plastic bridge can be found in Middlebury Run Park in East Akron.

The bridge cost $53,400 to make, is 58 feet long and 10 feet wide. It weighs in at 7000 pounds, almost a third of the 20,000 pounds it would weigh if made from steel. Despite its light weight it is claimed that it could still support a 10,000 pound car.

The bridge frame is made from isophthalic polyester resin, in conjunction with a wooden deck.

Advantages of the polymeric design include:

  • Light weight meaning heavy lifting cranes may not be required if the location is not easily accessible
  • Assembly can be carried out by a few men with hand tools in a short period of time
  • The structure is almost maintenance free
  • The bridge and stainless steel fasteners are not affected by corrosion
