Vitex Systems, Inc., a leading technology developer, licensor and engineering service provider for thin-film encapsulation and moisture barrier films used in flexible electronic products and displays, announced that its customer and licensee, Microemissive Displays (AIM: MED.L) of Edinburgh, Scotland, has commenced volume production and commercial shipment of its leading-edge polymer-based OLED microdisplays. Today signals an important milestone for Vitex in its effort toward full-fledged commercialization of OLED displays leveraging the company’s proprietary BarixTM thin-film encapsulation and Barix resin system material.
John McEachran, director of operations for MED, noted “The thin-film encapsulation process technology provided by Vitex has allowed our company to take full advantage of our unique Polymer OLED microdisplay design. Our eyescreenTM product packs 76,800 pixels on a tiny, 6mm diagonal, silicon chip but delivers our customers a superior viewing experience. We are pleased to be working with both Vitex and its partner, ANS. The leading-edge encapsulation technology from Vitex and excellent support surrounding ANS’ production equipment enabled us to meet our aggressive production ramp goals.”
The adoption of Vitex’s unique, extremely small (less than 0.5 mm) edge-seal process is one of the key features allowing MED to achieve their leading-edge performance. “We are very pleased that Vitex and our equipment partner and licensee, ANS of Korea, were able to work in close collaboration with MED—enabling them to ramp their product into volume production, as scheduled” noted Chyi-Shan Suen, director of marketing for Vitex Systems. He added, “We’re equally pleased in that today’s announcement marks a further step in our effort to accelerate adoption of our leading thin-film encapsulation solution in the development of next-generation displays and electronics products.”
The cooperation between Vitex and MED began last year. Earlier this year, ANS has established a full service center in Dresden, Germany to service MED and other customers interested in pursing thin film encapsulation for OLEDs, thin film solar cells and other organic electronics.
