BHP Billiton Complete Hillside Expansion Ahead of Schedule

BHP Billiton officially opened their expanded Hillside plant at Richard’s Bay in South Africa. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy President Jacob Zuma, members of the BHP Billiton Board and other dignitaries.

The expansion project was completed in 20 months, a full 6 months ahead of schedule. It was also completed for US$38 million less than the US$449 million budget figure.

The expansion works consisted of increasing the plant’s output by 25% or 132,000 tonnes per annum. In doing so a third potline had to be constructed, as well as an anode baking furnace, additional casting facilities and additional infrastructure.
