Scientific Solutions Goes Green

The management of Scientific Solutions is proud to announce they have “Gone Green”, introducing sound environmental management practices to reduce their environmental overall impact .

They have made undertaken an assessment of energy, water and waste, and from that identify opportunities to improve Scientific Solutions environmental business performance and with the view of reaching Carbon neutrality. Changes have been made to the working structure within the company to implement these opportunities.

Managing Director, Phil Harrip, believes we have certain responsibilities in all areas, not just the Science Industry – environmental sensitivity is one such area.

Transport is Australia's fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientific Solutions has joined Greenfleet, a not-for-profit organisation with a program providing a simple way to reduce a vehicle's impact on the environment . Greenfleet will plant 17 native trees on behalf of a sponsor. These trees will help to create a forest, and as they grow will absorb the greenhouse gases that a vehicle produces in one year.

Recent expansion in communications technologies create a real opportunity. With the exception of one facility, all offices have now been relocated to home-based offices. Eliminating the need for staff to drive vehicles to and from work every day reduces CO2 pollution in the atmosphere significantly. Transport practices have been implemented which further reduce the need to make vehicle trips for singular purposes. It is estimated that this will be a saving of about 15,000 km each year per vehicle, which would otherwise add about 4 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Staff work flexible hours and can harness natural light resources, thus conserving energy. Where possible, intelligent lighting systems have also been introduced.

Water saving fittings, rain water tanks and other environmentally-friendly initiatives have been implemented to conserve water resources.

Scientific Solutions has adopted the practise of recycling all waste, changing paper and other office supplies to recycled materials, and has implemented a tagline on all emails asking e-mail recipients not to print out the e-mail unless it is absolutely necessary.
