PETCORE to Ban Oriented Polystyrene Sleeves

The organization that represents the European PET industry, PETCORE announced that they will call for a ban on Oriented Polystyrene Sleeves, used in the packaging of PET bottles.

PETCORE is calling for the ban as the polystyrene sleeves are not suited to the PET recycling process.

Most European PET recyclers favour the use of water float-sink tanks. In these tanks the polystyrene sinks along with the PET chips, making it effectively inseparable. When the polystyrene enters the PET spinning and blow moulding manufacturing process as recyclate it produces noxious fumes.
