The EDAX Pattern Region of Interest Analysis System (PRIASTM) is a useful tool for imaging and displaying the microstructural characteristics of a material. This special system images samples using an array of positional electron detectors and employs electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) detectors to record and index EBSD patterns.
Up to 25 detector regions of interest (ROIs) can be imaged synchronously to produce and display multiple images at once that display topographic contrasts, orientations, and atomic numbers.
This array of images can be further processed mathematically to isolate, enhance, or suppress particular contrast mechanisms of interest as well as to analyze and visualize material microstructure in a way never possible before.
Traditional SEM imaging is difficult because SE and backscattered electron (BSE) detectors are not ideally positioned for imaging a tilted sample, which is necessary for optimal EBSD pattern collection.
Additionally, a highly tilted sample and a well-polished surface are required. Imaging capabilities can be improved with a forward scatter detector (FSD) system. However, to fully utilize the information in the electrons scattered from the sample, it might be necessary to use multiple detectors or exposures from a single detector that is positioned differently.
It is necessary to position these detectors around the edge of the EBSD phosphor screen, away from the strongest signal. PRIAS eliminates the need for extra hardware and pre-selection or detector placement by imaging every detector at once to produce a set of images with the best contrast.
