For nearly 100 years, our company has innovated solutions to optimize communications technologies, from simple radio test sets to sophisticated network assurance platforms. Always an industry leader, the company has consistently complemented its strong R&D roots with smart, strategic acquisitions and mergers.
Viavi Solutions started in 1923 as Wandel and Goltermann, a European company that grew from two technicians building and selling radios into one of the world’s largest suppliers of electronic test and measurement equipment.
The company strengthened its telecommunications portfolio by joining with Wavetek in 1998, and in 2000 moved beyond instrumentation by joining with TTC, a leading provider of service assurance software and centralized test-and-monitoring systems.
This merger of the world’s second and third largest test-and-measurement companies became Acterna. In 2005, JDSU acquired Acterna to synergize communications test-and-measurement capabilities with fiber optic transport and transmission. A number of acquisitions followed, including Agilent and Finisar network tools, GenComm wireless test equipment, and Network Instruments enterprise appliances and software solutions.
Prior to acquiring Acterna, JDSU entered the specialty coatings market with the acquisition of Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc. (OCLI), the developers of many of our optical security and performance products.
After years of strong performance in two distinct markets (network and service enablement and optical network components), JDSU split. Viavi Solutions and Lumentum Holdings formed in 2015 as two independent, publicly-traded companies.
