Thin 100% Recycled PET Sheets as an Alternative to Existing XPE and XPP Products

Armacell has expanded its ArmaFORM PET product line with the introduction of ArmaFORM PET Foil, which is a thin 100% recycled PET sheet that can be used as a highly sustainable substitute to commercially available XPP and XPE products. The fully recyclable, thermo-formable material is supplied in different thicknesses, starting from 1mm.

Exotic Properties of ArmaFORM PET Foil

With an excellent temperature range of up to +180°C and density range of 70 – 300 kg/m³, ArmaFORM PET Foil is a better replacement to existing cross-linked XPP and XPE products.

Armacell also offers customized formulations of ArmaFORM PET Foil. Compared to other thermoplastic foil products, ArmaFORM PET Foil has:

  • Higher thermal stability
  • Superior chemical stability
  • Better stiffness and compression properties

In addition, ArmaFORM PET Foil has a smooth surface structure due to closed and fine cells, thus enabling better processing in terms of forming, die cutting, lamination and much more. It is also possible to apply a range of different facings, including glass, aluminum and nonwoven scrims.

ArmaFORM PET Foil has a broad service temperature range, resisting cold from -40°C to heat up to +180°C. Therefore, the thermoforming window of this recycled PET sheet is much broader than comparable XPP and XPE products. In addition, the material’s heat resistance facilitates its processing and shaping.

The standard grade of ArmaFORM PET Foil meets the requirements of FMVSS302 and DIN 4102 fire testing with classification B2. Armacell also supplies customized formulations for improved fire resistance upon request.

The "Green" Option Among Thermoplastic Foils

ArmaFORM PET Foil is a highly ecological material like all other ArmaFORM PET products, reducing cumulative energy demand and carbon dioxide emissions significantly on comparison with other commercially available products. It is a 100% recycled product made from the recyclate of PET bottles. This means 100% of production scrap is reused for manufacturing.

It is possible to recycle the PET Foil completely at the end of its service life. Here, the cradle-to-cradle principle is consistently adopted by Armacell to eliminate waste by performing material recycling in a closed loop so that the material can be continuously reused.

The environmental performance of ArmaFORM PET Foil is far superior as its energy consumption for production is 3.5 times less than that of PE foils of the same density and size. This, in turn, reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 94%.

Applications of ArmaFORM PET Foil

Since ArmaFORM PET Foil is a recyclable product made out of 100% recycled material, it can help the automotive industry and other industries in their efforts towards sustainable solutions. In the automotive sector, the PET foil finds use in the fabrication of trunk lining, wheel protection, chamber absorbers, roof liner, door water shields and much more. Roofing materials, padding under flooring or cladding panels are some of the applications of the PET foil in the building and construction industry.

Conclusion

With the introduction of this fully recyclable, thermo formable PET foil, Armacell remains a leader in the industry in terms of technological development and environmental responsibility.
