Analysis of Water and Wastewater

Water is the source and basis of all life. It is vital for metabolism and is the most significant victuals. As a solvent and transporting agent, water contains the most important minerals and nutrients, and also, increasingly, dangerous pollutants, which bioaccumulate in terrestrial or aquatic organisms. Impurities can be generally found in all types of water- natural and treated drinking water for process and cooling water to the water for use in food production and pharmaceuticals.

High organic contamination in water may act as a hindrance to several industrial operations, leading to problems. For instance, an excess of organic matter can foster microbiological growth or, when disinfecting drinking water, encourage the presence of undesirable byproducts.

Typical Matrices for Water Analysis

  • Drinking water
  • Surface water
  • Process control
  • Boiler Feed water
  • Cooling water
  • Sewage / Rain water
  • Effluent

In the context of quality control and risk assessment, all industries require economical and rapidly responding methods and equipment that can handle the ever more complex spectrum of dangerous materials, the decreasing detection limits and the increasing throughput of samples.

Metrohm, a leading producer of equipment for chemical analysis, is familiar with such challenges. It provides the most recent instruments and systems with which one can check the composition of water samples. Metrohm provides end-to-end solutions for users’ analytical problems, and one can count on Metrohm’s expertise. Metrohm contacts are efficient experts, who develop customized applications for users and provide them with expert support in all matters concerning water analysis.

2035 Process Analyzer

For Potentiometric, Photometric or Thermometric Determinations

The 2035 Process Analyzer from Metrohm Process Analytics is the new solution for 24/7 online monitoring of industrial operations, as well as water and wastewater. If one wants to track chemical parameters in a single stream or in many streams, the 2035 Process Analyzer is designed to become an integral part of any sophisticated plant automation.

The 2035 Process Analyzer is useful in many ways, and comes in three fundamental configurations such as thermometric , photometric and potentiometric. Any of these can be incorporated with more techniques like pH and/or conductivity measurement for a complete water profile.

Using this analyzer, users can monitor vital process parameters like ortho and total phosphate around the clock. Total phosphate (PO4-P), a plant nutrient which in high concentrations in surface waters, can result in over-fertilization. For biological wastewater treatment, the bioavailable ortho-PO4 (o-PO4) is essential for the bacteria to live. The DIN 38 505-D9 photometric determination method along with a compact digestion cuvette is used to track both ortho and total phosphate-phosphorus. The 2035 TP Analyzer can measure in three ranges such as Low 0–150 µg/L PO4-P, Standard 0–5 mg/L PO4-P, and High 0–100 mg/L PO4-P. Other uses such as ammonia or NO2-/NO3- analysis can also be carried out to optimize the biological nutrient removal process.

The 2035 Process Analyzer at a Glance

  • Flexibility and versatility to fit almost any application
  • High accuracy for lower detection limits
  • Automatic calibration choice
  • Combine with other measurements for better process control (pH, conductivity)
  • Thermometric option for complicated, aggressive matrices
  • Monitor many sample streams
  • Complete separation of the wet and electronic parts
  • Remote operation abilities
