Fabric softener contains quaternary ammonium salts as its active ingredient, and therefore its cost and performance are evaluated by accurately measuring the amount of these salts. This article describes one method of using back titration to determine the amount of dialkyl dimethyl quaternary ammonium salts.
Sample
Fabric Softener
Sample Preparation
For this titration, 1.8 g of sample is weighed accurately and dissolved in 200 mL isopropanol.

Analysis of Samples
2 mL of the sample is pipetted into a 250 mL beaker followed by the addition of 5 mL isopropanol. Once it is fully dissolved, 150 mL of deionized water and 4 mL of borate buffer solution are added. 10 mL c(SDS), or 0.004 mol/L, is then added to the solution. Finally, the solution is titrated with c(Hyamine) at 0.004 moL/L until the equivalence point is passed.
