ASTM D1246 Determination of Bromide in Water

Bromide (Br) is a naturally occurring element that is typically found in seawater sources at a concentration of approximately 65 mg/L, as well as in drinking water at a concentration of approximately 0.5 mg/L in drinking water. If the Br concentrations exceed these levels, it may be indicative of contamination by fertilizers, road salt or industrial wastewater in the ground water. The following experimental data has been shown to determine the concentration of bromide in water by utilizing a Br ion-selective electrode according to ASTM D1246.

The water samples were initially spiked with a 75 mg/L or 130 mg/L concentration of Br. A volume of 100 mL of the sample was then pipetted into a sample beaker, following which 2 mL of ISA was added and stirred vigorously for 1 minute. The Br ion-selective electrodes were then placed in the sample solution and stirred for two minutes. The Br concentration was then measured when stirring ceased.
