In this interview, AZoM talks to Bruker's Verena Streitferd about the advantages of integrated NMR solutions.

Technology Harmonization Allows Direct Method Transfers Between R&D & QC Without Separate Validation

Please could you introduce yourself, your background, and what you are doing here today?

My name is Verena Streitferdt, and I have been working with NMR for over eight years. I began in 2016 with my master's thesis, which focused on NMR. I continued this journey during my PhD, where I had the opportunity to delve deeper into the field and truly explore the power and versatility of NMR. This versatility within a single method has always fascinated me.

How does NMR technology add more value compared to other analytical methods?

In my opinion, NMR really stands out because it provides deep insights into the structure of molecules. It adds significant value, especially when it comes to stereochemistry questions. For instance, when dealing with isomers, NMR can determine their conformation, such as the double bond conformation.

While MS can provide the molecular weight, NMR is crucial for understanding the conformation and configuration. It excels at analyzing the true molecular structure and the E-Z configuration of double bonds, for example.

What possibilities does NMR offer that other methods do not?

NMR is a non-destructive method, allowing you to reuse the sample for other analyses. Additionally, NMR provides dynamic information, such as chemical exchange and the proximity of different groups within a molecule. This type of valuable information is primarily accessible through NMR, making it an indispensable tool for detailed molecular analysis.

How can integrated NMR solutions optimize high-throughput environments?

If you optimize sample handling, data acquisition, and data analysis with an integrated NMR system, you can significantly increase throughput. By combining this with robotic systems, as we do at BASF, we can further enhance productivity. This not only benefits our NMR department but also our partners who provide the samples. Integrated and automated systems lead to higher efficiency and productivity for everyone involved.

What are the benefits of finding harmonized methods for upcoming NMR technology?

Transferring a method from a high-field NMR instrument to one available in a QC lab, like a benchtop NMR, would save significant time and effort. A harmonized system would be incredibly beneficial, as it would eliminate the need to validate the method on the high-field system and then on the benchtop system. This direct transfer would streamline the process and improve efficiency in our QC lab.
