In this interview, AZoM talks to James Parker about the new Vanta Element handheld XRF analyzer. This next-generation analyzer series stands out for its durability and accuracy in an affordable package, making it ideal for demanding settings and providing a competitive edge in analysis.

Can you describe yourself and explain your role at Evident?

My name is James Parker. As part of Evident's Analytical Instruments Division, I am responsible for product management and marketing for XRF analyzers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). I have been with the company since 2011.

I began as an XRF specialist in sales, and my current responsibilities include overseeing the XRF product range for the EMEA region. This covers distributor and technical support, customer training, marketing materials like brochures, and a lot more.

What's new in Evident's handheld XRF portfolio?

We are introducing the next-generation Vanta Element and Vanta Element-S models, our latest handheld XRF analyzers. These units will replace our previous Element series analyzers.

Why should someone consider the Vanta Element XRF analyzer?

Vanta Element XRF analyzers are for customers looking for budget options without compromising on quality. They are intended for entry-level users but offer improved ergonomics, software features, and outstanding prices.

Although these are our budget versions, they retain the robustness, accuracy, and precision that the Vanta line is known for. The Vanta Element series delivers excellent performance and is still easy to use and durable.

These analyzers can be used for simple applications, such as checking precious metal content in jewelry, monitoring soil for environmental reasons, and identifying standard alloy grades for scrap sorting or quality control.

While they are designed for simple tasks, the Vanta Element models are adaptable and can handle more complex applications. We are confident in their durability and offer a three-year warranty. The earlier versions had a warranty timeframe of one year.

Vanta XRF analyzers are known for their high throughput, stability, and count rate. How does the Vanta Element analyzer include these features, and how does it differ from other XRF models?

The new Vanta Element models have an entry-level silicon drift detector, which provides twice the count rate and higher resolution than prior models with silicon pin detectors.

This improves precision and stability, decreases detection limits, and produces faster results. All Vanta devices, including the Element and Element-S, use our proprietary Axon Technology.

This enables stable energy scale calibration despite temperature fluctuations. It also allows for faster processing of X-ray counts, resulting in consistent, dependable results. In addition, we have updated the interface with capabilities such as USB data export, onboard PDF production, and improved navigation. We have extended these capabilities to our entry-level XRF analyzers without sacrificing quality.

The Vanta Element series is well-suited for scrap recycling and metal fabrication. Can you tell us more about the attributes that make it ideal for these industries?

The improved software interface clearly displays alloy grade names and compositions. It highlights any deviations from specifications in real time. For example, if a 316 stainless steel sample has 9.5 percent nickel rather than the specified 10 to 14 percent, the analyzer will quickly detect it.

The grade libraries are completely configurable, allowing a variety of regional standards like DIN, EN, ASTM, and British specs. The wide 4.3-inch display screen provides good visibility in all lighting conditions, and the ergonomic design makes it comfortable to use for extended periods of time.

What are the most significant improvements in the new versions of the Vanta Element and Element-S analyzers?

The silicon drift detector improves count rates and resolution, resulting in more consistent and faster results. The user-friendly software, which includes a modernized interface and new web-based Vanta Control software, removes installation hassles and increases usability across multiple platforms, including Mac, iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows.

Customizable calibration methods enable users to add or change elements to satisfy individual needs. Enhanced ergonomics include a smaller, rubber-molded handle that improves grip and decreases operator fatigue.

A new faceplate enables tool-free window changes and quicker maintenance, among other enhanced durability features. The three-year warranty indicates our trust in the instrument's durability and dependability.

How does the Vanta Element analyzer help customers gain a competitive advantage?

Vanta Element and Element-S analyzers offer precise chemical and grade identification, as well as intuitive connectivity capabilities for quick and easy data sharing. This allows users to easily prepare and distribute reports, which is important in industries such as the scrap metal and precious metals trade.

Reliability is another important benefit. Customers must know that their data is correct and consistent, especially when negotiating rates or assuring compliance. Finally, Evident's global technical support network offers fast access to the expertise of our XRF professionals, which strengthens their trust in our solutions.

The Vanta Element analyzer is well-known for its durability. What settings can it work in, and how much can it withstand?

The Vanta Element series analyzer is intended for use in harsh locations, ranging from scrap yards to building sites, engineering companies, and even agriculture. The analyzers can function at temperatures ranging from -10 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius (14 °F to 113 °F) without losing performance.

Each device undergoes thorough testing to ensure stability under specified conditions. The analyzers are IP54-rated, making them resistant to dust and water. They also meet military-grade drop test standards for falls of up to 1.2 meters (4 ft). Designed to withstand weather exposure, dusty environments, and accidental drops, the Vanta Element analyzers deliver reliable performance in challenging settings.

How does the Vanta Element analyzer compare to other portable XRF devices on the market?

The Vanta Element line stands out for being affordable, tough, and packed with advanced technology. Not many competitors can match its solid build, fast software, or reliable networking options. Plus, the Vanta series makes it easy to stay connected with cloud, web, and USB support.

Ultimately, it is about selecting the appropriate instrument for the job. The Vanta Element analyzer provides a complete package for most applications, combining dependability, ease of use, and world-class service. I also tested its durability by cleaning a demo unit with a car wash jet, which is not suggested but definitely demonstrates its toughness.
