Furnaces for The Precious Metals Industry

Established in 1938, Carbolite has over 60 years experience in the design & manufacture of electric laboratory & industrial furnaces, laboratory & industrial ovens & incubators.

During this time, Carbolite has established an enviable reputation for its ability to design and manufacture quality products for standard & special applications for laboratory, pilot scale & industrial applications.

Laboratory Furnaces

The extensive portfolio offered by Carbolite includes both laboratory chamber furnaces & laboratory tube furnaces to 1800°C. Tube furnaces are available as single or multi-zone, horizontal/vertical, split & rotating models. A wide variety of tube diameters & tube heated lengths is available. Chamber furnaces are available in many sizes; models include high temperature furnaces, ashing/calcining furnaces, furnaces for the analysis of coal & coke and precious metals evaluation furnaces (cupellation/fire assay).

Industrial Furnaces

In addition to the range of electric laboratory furnaces, ovens and incubators, Carbolite also offers an extensive range of pilot plant and industrial furnaces and industrial ovens for various heat treatment applications. Product ranges include:

  • Mesh belt furnaces
  • Roller hearth furnaces
  • Rotary hearth furnaces
  • Top loading furnaces
  • Top hat furnaces
  • Blade strip hardening furnaces
  • Elevator hearth furnaces

The range of industrial ovens includes both batch and continuous ovens. Examples of these are aluminum solution ovens, bogie hearth ovens, air recirculating chamber ovens and inert atmosphere ovens.

Crucible Furnaces For The Precious Metals Market (SCF)

Features of Carbolite crucible furnaces for the precious metals market include:

  • Specifically designed for the smelting of precious metals
  • Maximum operating temperature 1400°C
  • Each furnace has twin chamber construction
  • The SCF4 and SCF8 models have the appropriate number of apertures pre-cut to hold the crucibles in position
  • The SCF 24 and SCF 48 models offer the same size chambers, but there are no apertures, allowing free selection of crucible size and quantity
  • Crucible capacity: SCF 4/SCF 8 models - 120mm x 180mm (maximum outer diameter x height) SCF 24/SCF 48 models - 79 x 97mm (maximum outer diameter x height)
  • The chamber is ventilated by a 50mm flue fitted in each hinged lid, which pivots on parallel links, keeping the hot face insulation away from the operator
  • Silicon carbide elements are mounted horizontally behind the tiles which are situated around the work chamber

Cupellation (Assay) Furnaces (CF) For The Precious Metals Market

Features of Carbolite cupellation furnaces and assay furnaces include:

  • The assay of gold alloys by cupellation is the standard method used by the United Kingdom Assay Offices and a reference laid down by the International Hallmarking Convention
  • The Carbolite range of assay and cupellation furnaces has an international reputation for close temperature uniformity, low heat loss and maximum fume control
  • Maximum operating temperature 1200°C
  • One bench mounted and three floor standing models, with capacities ranging from 15 x cupel #8 up to 90 x cupel #6
  • Silicon carbide heating elements are mounted above and below the work chamber, providing even heating of the cupels
  • Fumes are extracted through an insulated exhaust duct and a removable container, situated below the chimney, collects any condensed lead
  • Incoming air, which is controlled by an adjustable valve at the rear of the furnace, is preheated by passing over the lower elements prior to entering the chamber - ensuring rapid heat transfer and even temperature distribution
  • The work chamber, roof and hearth are lined with silicon carbide tiles which will withstand the corrosive lead fumes emitted during the process
