JEOL USA, Inc. is revolutionizing the world of 3D Printing. Collectively with JEOL’s special additive manufacturing technology, innovation in additive manufacturing is progressing at an unparalleled speed.
The electron beam metal AM machine from JEOL makes it feasible to cleanly and effectively produce lighter manufactured parts that are utilized in the energy and aerospace sectors. It increases output and curtails development time by high repeatability and high-quality modeling, a combination of multiple parts, and weight reduction.
JEOL Additive Manufacturing Technology
JEOL has come up with a so-called “Electron Beam Metal AM Machine” that has a higher density, higher power, and higher speed compared to other laser beam techniques. This is done with the help of the technology of the world’s highest level performance electron microscope and electron beam lithography system for semiconductor manufacturing. It enables cost savings and design freedom via increased productivity.

Long Life Cathode over 1,500 Hours and Helium-Free Electron Beam Metal AM Machine
Main Features
- Helium-Free and powder dispersal prevention system "e-Shield"
- Long Life Cathode
- Automatic Electron Beam Correction
- Remote Monitoring System
- JEOL USA established, extensive service support organization
- Realization of an eco-friendly and sustainable society
The JEOL Advantage for Additive Manufacturing
- Focus on total system uptime, along with a long-life cathode of more than 1,500 hours. The complete cathode life and manufacturing quality are retained in the clean manufacturing surrounding of the system.
- A clean and helium-free environment and “e-shield” removes smoke events at the time of manufacturing. JEOL’s special powder dispersal prevention system prevents the scattering phenomenon.
- The potential to remotely track conditions and manufacturing status.
- The focus and spot shape of the electron beam are corrected in an automatic manner as per the irradiation position. This technology was developed in-house, based on the company's market leadership in electron beam lithography systems for semiconductor manufacturing.
- Manufacturing capacity is around 250 mm (diameter) × 400mm (height).
- Environmentally-friendly manufacturing. The system is capable of building several parts in a single run.
- JEOL USA’s current wide extensive network of more than 180 field service engineers.
A 3D Printer Built on JEOL Expertise and Support
The unique feature of the JEOL JAM-5200EBM that makes it stand out in this emerging field is that it is backed by JEOL’s decades-long expertise in the development and production of sophisticated electron optics technology that has been utilized for research and industrial applications.
JEOL is known to be the market leader in electron microscopy instruments. It has already contributed to the 3D printing value stream right from materials characterization and particle analysis to imaging and chemical analysis.
The JAM-5200EBM’s electron beam technology also draws upon JEOL’s 50+ years of experience in the development and production of generations of mask writing and spot beam lithography tools with special vacuum technology.
Long Life Cathode
“The Long-Life Cathode, which sustains more than 1,500 hours, could considerably decrease downtime for cathode replacement.” The secret is that JEOL’s original vacuum technology has been developed in the manufacturing of electron beam-related equipment.

Helium-Free and Powder Dispersal Prevention System “e-Shield”
No helium gas is needed to stop the scattering of powder. JEOL’s special powder dispersal prevention system prevents the scattering phenomenon. As a result of the helium-free environment, it is not just possible to manufacture in a clean space at an affordable cost, but “the surface of the cathode is also less susceptible to damage, allowing the electron beam to remain stable.”
Consequently, the manufacturing quality could be maintained until the end of the cathode’s lifetime.

Realization of an Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Society
With the help of JEOL’s “Electron Beam Metal AM Machine”, it is possible for users to build over one part in a single printing process. Almost no cutting is needed, thereby stopping materials from being wasted. Reusing metal powder is one more possibility. Hence, JEOL is working on the realization of a sustainable and environmentally-friendly society.
