What are CSTR Flow Reactors?

CSTR flow reactors from Vapourtec offer innovative capabilities for continuous flow chemistry applications.

Features of the CSTR Flow Reactor

  • Heat and cool the reactor -10 °C to 150 °C
  • Stirrer speeds selectable from 100 rpm to 1200 rpm
  • Easy to assemble/disassemble, leak-free operation
  • Wetted materials Glass, PTFE, PFA, Kalrez
  • Option for photochemical CSTR 365 nm to 700 nm LED light sources
  • Facilitates CSTR cascades
  • Cascade of up to eight reactors on an R-Series system
  • Ideal for flow reactions involving solids
  • Compatible with E-Series and R-Series systems
  • 5 ml to 40 ml volume per CSTR
  • Pressurized reactions up to 5.0 bar
  • Built-in burst disc and optional protective screen

Enables Cascades of CSTR’s

The behavior of two or more CSTRs operating in sequence as a cascade can resemble that of a plug flow reactor (PFR). In contrast to a batch reactor, this allows for continuous flow reactions with regulated residence time distribution and less back mixing.

On an R-Series system, the Vapourtec modular CSTR can be set up in a cascade of up to eight, and on each E-Series system, it can be set up in a cascade of two. Using CSTRs also has the advantage of accessing bigger reactor contents, up to 320 ml in the case of R-Series, which enables higher throughputs and/or longer residence times.

Flow Reactions Involving Solids

Compared to plug flow reactors (PFR) and microchip reactors, CSTRs are far more tolerant of particulates, allowing for the following processes:

  • Insoluble intermediates
  • Nanoparticle formation
  • Crystallization
  • Heterogeneous catalysts
  • Inorganic bases

When operating under pressure, a wider variety of reactions are conceivable, such as:

  • Reactions at temperatures higher than reflux
  • Gas-liquid reactions
  • Gas-liquid-solid reactions

The Vapourtec CSTR is developed with safety as a top priority. A burst disk and an optional safety screen are standard safety measures for all pressurized reactions.

Heat Cool and Stir

Numerous chemical reactions can be carried out, thanks to a wide operating temperature range of -10 °C to 150 °C. Stirring speeds, which can be chosen from 100 to 1200 rpm, also make this adaptability possible.

Easy to Assemble and Disassemble

Chemists’ feedback has made it possible to swiftly and simply disassemble the Vapourtec CSTR for cleaning or catalyst loading. The CSTR has a long, trouble-free life because it is made of glass, PTFE, PFA, Kalrezr, and chemically inert components.

Photochemical CSTR Option
