A new flexible smart window material has been developed by researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. This new flexible smart material can control both light and heat generated from the sun, when it is integrated into sunroofs, windows, or even curved glass surfaces.

They suggest that these materials will help to develop anti-glare surfaces, detect damage or moisture, or even encrypt secret messages.

Metal-Free Metamaterials Transmit Wavelengths of Light Using Flash of Light

A study, published in App. Phys. Lett. 2016, DOI:10.1063/1.4959272, highlights that only a streak of light is needed to transform a metal-free metamaterial from a state that blocks specific wavelengths of light to a state that allows such restricted wavelengths to pass through.
