US Skating Champion Makes a Return with Ceramic Hips

The 1996 US National figure skating champion Rudy Galindo has made a welcome return to the ice at New York’s Rockefeller Center after have both of his hips replaced.

Galindo was diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN), a degenerative disease that affects the hips. The diagnosis came two years ago, but he kept performing until the end of last Spring, when the pain became too much.

He underwent surgery on both hips, having them replaced with ceramic implants last Fall.

Several weeks of intense physiotherapy have built up the strength he required to allow him to return to the ice. His come back will be complete when he joins the National Champions on Ice tour on April 3.
