American Superconductor D-VAR Power Regulation Systems

American Superconductor have introduced D-VAR(TM), a dynamic, yet economical solution for regulating voltage levels by injecting reactive power. It is based on their Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Systems, and injects power into a grid at the precise location where the voltage problem occurs.

The D-VAR systems are portable and able to inject continuous reactive power of between 4 to 8 MVAR or instantaneous amounts up to 18 MVAR, where a VAR is the unit of measure for reactive power. This ensures regular, reliable and uninterrupted power delivery, even during peak periods.

The first unit has already been sod in conjunction with GE Industrial to PacifiCorp, for use in a wind farm.
