Imatek Installs IM10 Impact Test System at University of Malaysia

Imatek has recently completed the successful installation of an IM10 Impact Test system at the University of Malaysia, Perlis (UniMap).

UniMap is located in Perlis which is the smallest state in Malaysia at the northernmost part of the Malaysian peninsula, less than 35 km from the border of Thailand.

The university was originally known as KUKUM (Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia, or Northern Malaysia University College of Engineering), it was approved by the cabinet as a public institution of higher learning in May, 2001.

UniMap now has roughly 5000 students, and a workforce of more than 1000 people comprising academic and non-academic staff. There are eight engineering schools offering undergraduate and postgraduate academic degree programmes.

The IM10R-15 machine will be used by engineering students at the university to conduct research into the impact properties of a wide variety of materials.

Initially UniMap will be focussing on Polymer research although they intend to extend the capabilities of the IM10 machine in the future to accommodate a wider range of tests, including charpy and high rate tensile testing of metallic specimens. UniMap are also expected to select additional machine options in the future to enable the testing of advanced composites.

Imatek’s IM10 range of Impact Testers accommodates a wide range of medium energy tests on materials, specimens and end products of various geometries. All machines are fitted with laboratory grade instrumentation as standard. Very rigid construction ensures the highest possible accuracy of test results with the minimum of machine compliance.

A wide range of options are available on the IM10 system which enable testing in accordance with standard geometries, as well as custom testing. One of the options selected by UniMap was the high velocity impact option which uses an aircraft grade bungee to accelerate the mass carriage to speeds in excess of 20m/s.

Other IM10 options include sample strippers for extracting the striker from tough ductile specimens, a temperature conditioning chamber and high speed fully integrated video system which provides visualisation of the specimen failure mode.

Imatek is a leading UK based manufacturer of materials testing equipment primarily in the fields of impact testing. Imatek’s products are used all over the world to test the properties of materials, components and assemblies in industries such as aerospace, polymer processing, steel production, automotive and academic research.
