Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division was recognized by the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce and the Environmental Committee with the 2010 Solid Waste Reduction Award for the Company's commitment to sustainable environmental practices. The award was given during the Chamber's Environmental Awards Luncheon on September 15.
"We take the role of environmental stewardship seriously," said Charles St. John, Vulcan's regional environmental manager. "All Vulcan employees are committed to helping maintain a safe and healthy community. Our effort to reduce solid waste is just one of the many ways Vulcan works to protect the environment and the communities where we operate."
In 2009, Vulcan recycled an estimated 300,000 tires in the production of rubberized asphalt. These tires would have otherwise taken up space in local landfills.
St. John commented, "Vulcan appreciates the Irwindale Chamber and Environmental Committee for recognizing our recycling activities. This is a testament to our ongoing sustainability efforts."
Vulcan also received special recognition from elected officials including U.S. Representative Judy Chu, who presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition praising the Company for ". . . extraordinary work, outstanding leadership and achievement in significantly reducing your carbon footprint."
The Irwindale Chamber of Commerce's Environmental Committee hosts an annual event dedicated to providing information and resources as well as recognition for businesses and organizations that implemented and achieved reduction in their carbon footprint. This year's Environmental Awards Luncheon was held at City of Hope's Cooper Auditorium.
Previously, Vulcan was also named Business of the Month (July 2010) by the Irwindale Chamber and recognized by the Irwindale City Council.
