BASF Future Business GmbH, part of the BASF Group have just formed a strategic partnership with teco Optronics Corp. of Taiwan. Under the agreement, BASF will acquire a stake in teco and enter into a research agreement with them to develop OLED’s (organic light emitting displays).
BASF will assist teco to develop light emitting dyes, which will be used for the manufacture of the displays. The dyes , also known as emitters, are chemical substances that turn electric current into light.
Current technology revolves around liquid crystal displays, which require back lighting to provide the necessary brightness. OLED’s eliminate the need to background illuminations, hence reducing power consumption, and making them more energy efficient.
Other advantages of OLED’s over conventional LCD displays include:
- Images can be clearly viewed in sunlight without an additional light source
- The displays are brighter
- They produce more brilliant and intense colours
- The displays can be clearly viewed from oblique angles
OLED displays are considered to be the displays of the future. The estimated market for OLED’s is $3 billion in the next three years.
