Cardia Bioplastics Seeks Commercial Partners to Develop New Biodegradable Bag

Australian company Cardia Bioplastics Limited (CNN.AX) is looking for commercial partners to develop a plastic bag made from carbon emissions and starch.

Cardia Bioplastics’ CO2S resin is made from emissions that are captured before being released into the atmosphere and turned into a polypropylene carbonate (PPC) polymer. The PPC is then blended with starch to produce the resin before it is made into a biodegradable bag.

Cardia Chairman Pat Volpe said the firm has already completed a first production run and is now in discussions with several parties interested in the technology.

“This is the first time CO2 emissions have been transformed in this way and the development has the potential to revolutionize bioplastics production,” said Volpe. “We are delighted to be able to turn a problematic waste into an environmentally-friendly alternative product.”

The Company is now working to perfect the technology to increase the content of the PPC so that 60% less virgin oil is used when compared to other oil-based biodegradable products.
