BioWare plastic drinking cups from Huhtamaki have been used in one of the Europe’s ancient street carnivals, Cologne Carnival.
The organizers of the event mainly focused on safety and environment-friendly aspects and hence selected the plastic sups made of Ingeo plant-based bioplastic. During this year’s carnival festival, over one million Huhtamaki’s bioplastic cups have been utilized.
The plastic resin used in the BioWare drinking cups requires small amount of energy to produce when compared to petroleum-based plastic resins that are utilized in traditional plastic cups. It also emits less greenhouse gases.
Cologne Carnival Festival Committee’s Chairman, Markus Rittersbach said that Huhtamaki’s cups have been used at the festival for the second consecutive year and it is expected that their use will continue in the upcoming years. The BioWare cups are eco-friendly, hygienic and safe to use.
The popularity of the Huhtamaki’s plant-based foodservice products has been enhanced by publicity received from the 2009 UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen and also by the need for improving safety and reducing environmental impact of the events such as Cologne Carnival. The entire line of BioWare products has received EN13432 certification, the European standard for compostability of packaging.
