Shell has opened the first pipeline-fed hydrogen fueling station in Torrance, California. Air Products’ fueling technology, hydrogen and West Coast pipeline system were integral parts of this event.
The fueling station, which was realized through collaboration between Air Products, Toyota, Shell, United States Department of Energy (DOE) and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), will provide hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles in the Los Angeles region.
The new fueling station is located beside the marketing and sales headquarters of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. The station is fed by hydrogen pipeline from Air Products. The pipeline is situated below 50 ft from the fueling station and is linked to Air Products’ Carson and Wilmington hydrogen production centers. Besides providing hydrogen for the fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen compression, dispensing and storage technology from Air Products are also integral parts of the station.
The fueling station contains a number of technology advancements, including the capacity to fuel four hydrogen fuel cell vehicles simultaneously from four dispensers. The requested fueling capacity of hydrogen in the station is 50 kg per 12 h day and the station has the capacity to reach up to 100 kg of hydrogen per day.
