Corning Open Joint Research Facility in Shanghai

Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS) and Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today announced the opening of a joint research facility on the Chinese mainland. The SICCAS-Corning facility is located in the Research and Development Center of SICCAS in Jiading, Shanghai.

The facility will provide Corning with a research platform to gain access to complementary expertise of SICCAS, China's leading research institute in the fields of materials science and technology. Related SICCAS technologies can be applied in new product development opportunities through collaboration with Corning at this new laboratory.

Combining the outstanding knowledge and research capabilities of SICCAS and Corning, the joint research facility will explore technologies to support the development of future Corning products that will address needs in China and worldwide. Through research in thermoelectric technologies, the SICCAS-Corning facility is exploring new high-performance materials that can aid in the electrification of vehicles, enabling better vehicle fuel efficiency and lower vehicle emissions.

As the world leader in specialty glass and ceramics, Corning has been actively participating in China's development for 30 years. Recently, Corning appointed a chief technology officer in Shanghai.

"We are committed to working with local technology leaders to create knowledge for future products for use in China and other regions of the world," said Dr. Mark Newhouse, chief technology officer, Asia. "Corning's continued success in China will be supported by our sustained investment in research and development. That investment is enhanced by partnerships such as the one we are announcing today with SICCAS."

"Over the past few decades, SICCAS has developed into a comprehensive inorganic, non-metallic materials institute that is capable of integrating fundamental research into technology innovation and application," said Professor Luo Hongjie, director of SICCAS. "The joint laboratory collaboration will set up a platform for both SICCAS and Corning to solve technical challenges that will help accelerate the growth of China's new energy industry."

Shi Erwei, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences, added, "We expect that SICCAS will try its best to promote projects in the joint facility. The Chinese Academy of Sciences will pay continuous attention to the project and provide necessary support."

A grand opening ceremony was held on June 28 at the new facility. Officers of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and customers joined Guo Jingkun, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Board, Shi Erwei, Luo Hongjie, Mark Newhouse, and Shi Youchun, director, Corning Research China, in the ceremony.
