Scion has offered an exclusive license to Sonae Indústria Group, one of the world’s wood technology leaders, to manufacture and sell the wood plastic pellet technology.
Scion has developed and patented the innovative technology that is used to produce wood plastic pellets under its biofiber research program and the initiative revolutionizes the global composition of plastics. The licensing deal provides an exclusive right to Sonae Indústria Group for commercializing the technology in the European market.
Scion’s science leader, Jeremy Warnes stated that the company noted the growth in the use of natural fiber reinforced plastics for commercial applications and realized the opportunity for wood fibers.
The innovative technology allows production of wood plastic composites using long wood fibers, which can be easily processed into bio-based fiber reinforced plastics by feeding it into conventional injection molders and extruders. The wood plastic pellets manufactured using the technology provides excellent strength to the traditional polymers. The technology’s resulting product has been named as WoodForce by Sonae Indústria Group.
The wood fiber reinforcement technology has a wide range of applications, including computer peripherals, appliance housings, automotive parts, furniture, pallets, fencing, decking and other applications for fiberglass and plastics products.
Christophe Chambonnet, Chief Marketing & Sales Officer at Sonae Indústria Group, commented that the deal helps to create a new opportunity by combining wood fibers and thermoplastic polymers. In addition, the deal offers a new outlook on the wood fiber application. Sonae Indústria Group also has the right to negotiate the licensing deal with Scion for various other regions excluding Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
