Olin Chlor Alkali Products, one of the largest manufacturers of chlorine and caustic soda in the U.S., announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Charleston, Tennessee.
The plant will produce high-quality caustic soda, chlorine and associated products. The Cleveland-based company has invested $160 million in the new plant and the construction will be completed in the year end of 2012.
The membrane cell manufacturing plant has a capacity to produce 200,000 t, which includes production expansion of potassium hydroxide (KOH). KOH is used to manufacture airplane de-icing fluids, detergents, soaps, herbicides, fertilizers, food and other products. Thus, the enhancement of the technology will enable Olin Chlor Alkali Products’ Charleston facility to address the growing demand for KOH. Mercury will not be utilized in the production process, once the new technology is installed at the plant.
The company’s President, Frank Chirumbole stated that they are thankful to the State of Tennessee for the incentives offered for this project, including $41 million of the Recovery Zone Facility bonds. The Charleston manufacturing facility will help to consistently meet customer needs.
