The Bosch Group, a global supplier of technology and services, announced that Robert Bosch will construct a pilot production line to carry out basic research on production processes and materials for developing next-generation lithium-ion cells. The line will be constructed in Eisenach, Germany.
BASF and ThyssenKrupp System Engineering will join Bosch’s pilot project and this union will accelerate the establishment of a European supplier network for production engineering and materials. The project uses ThyssenKrupp’s capability in process plant engineering and BASF’s materials expertise.
The Bosch team will work to create materials for electrolytes, cathodes and anodes and analyze their contacts. The pilot project focused on the technology application for the next-generation cells to the non-automotive segment is a complement to the efforts of Bosch’s joint venture with SB LiMotive and Samsung SDI. The pilot line is scheduled to produce the first samples of materials for trials starting from 2012. The work will be extended to achieve production capacity of over 200,000 lithium-ion cells per year by 2015. The company has also planned for volume production for marine applications.
