BASF and Colorcon have partnered to develop future film coating solutions utilizing Colorcon’s new pre-formulated additive and Kollicoat Smartseal 30 D.
Colorcon has produced a pre-formulated additive solution for the efficient preparation and utilization of the Kollicoat Smartseal 30D in taste masking applications. The additive lowers the time required for preparation by nearly 40% and reduces the count of materials to be dispersed by 50%.
Colorcon’s General Manager of Film Coating, Kamlesh Oza stated that the company selected Kollicoat Smartseal 30 D as it is the superior reverse enteric polymer for taste masking applications. The water-based dispersion is the first of its kind featuring both moisture barrier and taste masking properties, Oza said. It was produced to facilitate and speed up the water-based film coating applications, and paved ways for formulating pellet, tablet and particle coatings, he added.
Oza further said that the company’s partnership with BASF to produce the additive will result in batch-to-batch color constancy, speed, performance and simplicity facilitating the reconstitution of the film former in drug coating applications, while retaining functionality.
BASF’s Vice President of Global Marketing Pharma Ingredients, Ralf Fink stated that Kollicoat family’s latest addition, Smartseal 30 D adds moisture barrier and taste masking functionalities to the formulator toolbox. The company is happy to partner with Colorcon in this application field, he added.
BASF and Colorcon will present their latest findings on Kollicoat Smartseal 30 D at the Annual Meeting of the American Association Pharmaceutical Scientists to be conducted in Washington, D.C. BASF will present a poster titled, ‘Taste-Masking of Crystals by Coating with an Innovative Methacrylate Copolymer’, while Colorcon will present a poster under the title, ‘Performance Characteristics and Formulation of Kollicoat Smartseal 30 D.’
