Ecology Coatings has declared that it has synthesized bio-based generally recognized as safe (GRAS) ultraviolet (UV)-curable materials for producing coatings that can be used in food-contact applications and food packaging.
For its GRAS coating materials, Ecology Coatings has submitted a PCT patent application that has been received by the patent office with the merit as inventive and novel. This filing will enable the company to speed up the action for its US patents that are expected to be issued in the fiscal year 2012.
Bob Crockett, Chief Executive Officer at Ecology Coatings, stated that the company’s objective is to manufacture UV-curable products that can be utilized for food-contact applications for both animals and humans. The company’s GRAS coatings can be cured quickly and offer a barrier to grease, water and air, thus suitable for food wrappings and packaging, he said. GRAS coatings utilize flavors or edible dyes as flavor additives or inks, he said.
Crockett further said that the company has started discussions to license its technology to several chemical companies in order accelerate its commercialization. A packaging producer is expected to start testing the product in 2012 January, he added. The company’s target markets and the investment community have shown interest on the company’s proprietary products, he said. The company believes to have many announcements in the coming weeks, he added.
