Technic has declared that the first line of products marketed as per the gold reduction technology platform, Goldeneye has been commercially released. The Goldeneye technology platform includes electroplating techniques of the Techni NiPhos 611 and the Techni Nickel HT-2 barrier layer for connector applications.
Using Techni Nickel HT-2, it is possible to obtain a ductile, pure, low-stress nickel deposit with uniform thickness distribution. It is possible to enhance the corrosion characteristics of the complete coating system by the deposition of a high-uniformity nickel layer below the gold deposit.
By using the Techni NiPhos 611 technique, an electrodeposited nickel-phosphorous (Ni-P) alloy is obtained which consists of 6%-11% phosphorous. By incorporating phosphorous in the nickel deposit, it is possible to obtain a considerable improvement in the corrosion resistance properties.
In order to obtain superior performance, a duplex barrier layer system comprising pure nickel deposit from the Techni HT-2 process is used after which nickel-phosphorous is electroplated using Techni NiPhos 611.
According to Technic Advanced Technology Division VP, Rob Schetty, both Techni NiPhos 611 and Techni Nickel HT-2 barrier layer coatings can significantly improve gold plated contacts’ corrosion resistance, which in turn allows lower gold thicknesses to be plated without sacrificing functionality. There is no need for any modifications for implementation of these barrier layer coatings in present reel-to-reel plating lines and there is no need for any special rectification. Techni NiPhos 611 and Techni Nickel HT-2 are true "drop-in" substitutes for current nickel sulfamate solutions used commonly in the industry.
