DSM has successfully partnered with EPflex, a medical manufacturer, to introduce ComfortCoat hydrophilic coating with new guidewires. The coating technology will be offered by DSM and the guidewires will be created by EPflex.
EPflex is a producer of guidewire systems based on nitinol. Nitinol provides high stability and flexibility for treating the hard-to-reach lesions.
The ComfortCoat coating of DSM offers a strong lubricious coating and enhances the guidewire system’s performance. This coating decreases the amount of force required to reach complicated lesions and to traverse tight stenoses. The coated guidewires have high flexural strength, a very soft tip, a torsion stable core, and excellent gliding properties.
John Marugg, DSM Biomedical’s Business Manager, Coatings, stated that medical disciplines including cardiology, gastrology, radiology and urology use the Guidewire systems. Additionally, these devices have shown the wide potential of DSM’s coating methods and its own coating technologies in medical applications.
According to Bernhard Uihlein, EPflex’s CEO, guidewires are one of the primary devices that are frequently introduced into the body of a patient during surgery. EPflex is aiming to form simple methods for physicians and enhance the patient results, by improving their products using new coating technology.
