Veeco Instruments, a provider of equipment for developing and manufacturing hard disk drives, solar cells, LEDs and other devices, has declared that its TurboDisc K465i gallium nitride (GaN) metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) tool has been qualified by SemiLEDs for mass-producing high-brightness LEDs.
SemiLEDs has an advanced LED manufacturing plant in Taiwan. The company manufactures LED components and chips mainly for general lighting applications such as street lights, and residential, industrial and commercial lighting. It produces ultraviolet, green and blue LED chips under its brand MvpLED.
Chuong A. Tran, who serves as SemiLEDs’ President and Chief Operating Officer, commented that the company has installed Veeco Instruments’ TurboDisc K465i tool at its production facility located in Taiwan. Besides its established MOCVD technology, Veeco’s dedication to offering advanced LED production tool and the presence of is technology center in Hsinchu to offer improved local support are the reasons behind its selection, Tran added.
According to William J. Miller, Executive Vice President of Process Equipment at Veeco Instruments, the company is happy about its selection to supply its K465i MOCVD equipment to SemiLEDs. The K465i platform delivers superior productivity at a lower cost of production. The company’s Taiwan Technology Center will assist SemiLEDs to learn best practices in order to optimize the value of its new system and strengthen its dominance in the energy-saving lighting market, Miller concluded.
