Whitford, a fluoropolymer coating provider, has enhanced the original version of Fusion coating systems, launched in 2011. The coating system is based on sol-gel technology which is a mix of organic and inorganic chemistry.
The Fusion coating system has simpler and user-friendly chemistry than other sol-gel ceramic nonsticks that have complicated chemistry. In addition, it is produced without using perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It is the only sol-gel coating that is verified for compliance with European Union (EU) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food contact.
The company’s R&D team has enhanced the product in three important ways: better release, increased stain resistance and improved gloss. The release of sol-gel nonsticks have never been comparable to currently existing PTFE-based nonsticks. However, Whitford’s scientists have worked on it and the new version of Fusion has better release than other sol-gel nonsticks.
The new sol-gel nonstick coating has improved stain resistance, which is proved in recent tests. The tests have boiled tomato sauce in a pan coated with Fusion for 15 minutes. The coating showed no staining after doing a simple rinse and a wipe with a sponge. In addition to better stain resistance, Fusion’s improved technology offers a compact surface without irregularities. This provides a considerably high gloss compared to other sol-gel ceramic nonsticks.
