Corning, a producer of specialty glass and ceramics, has introduced Corning Gorilla Glass 2, a new damage-resistant cover glass, for use in next generation consumer electronics devices.
The use of Gorilla Glass 2 minimizes the cover glass thickness by up to 20% without affecting the performance of consumer electronic devices. In addition, it enables the production of more sleek and thin electronics devices and also contributes to brighter images and higher touch sensitivity.
The new glass composition from Corning is suitable for a number of devices like personal computers, tablets and smartphones. The company has featured the performance of the Gorilla Glass 2 cover glass at MobileFocus Global show, which was held on Feb 27, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain.
Corning has unveiled Gorilla Glass 2 at CES consumer technology tradeshow, which was held in January, 2012. Global Director of Corning Gorilla Glass’ Marketing and Commercial Operations, David R. Velasquez commented that since the product launch, the company has qualified the cover glass with over half of its existing customers and has also made the first shipments to major device manufacturers who have planned to commence production and release new consumer electronic products in the first quarter of 2012.
Corning has introduced the first Gorilla Glass in 2007 and now it is the most extensively used strengthened cover glass across the world. Till date, the product has been utilized by over 30 brands and deployed in over 600 consumer electronic models.
