Avestor have just started production of the world’s first fully commercial lithium-metal-polymer (LMP) battery in their new production plant in Boucherville, Quebec, Canada. Avestor is a 50/50 joint venture between Hydro-Quebec and Kerr-McGee Chemicals.
The LMP batteries are a revolutionary product, being the first commercially available alternative energy storage battery for applications such as telecommunications, automotive and public utilities.
Avestor has already proven their product works, with many prototype batteries being sold for use in the telecommunications industry, where tests surpassed customers expectations, displaying high performance and reliability. These test have been carried out over the last three years.
The opening of the new production facility means that they will be able to produce batteries on a commercial scale. Supply contracts are currently being negotiated with telecommunications providers.
Avestor also hope to develop products for the automotive and utilities sectors in the near future.
Key features of the LMP batteries are small size and large storage capacities, making them ideal for applications such as electric powered vehicles. They are also a solid state device, meaning they have no acid, as do conventional automotive batteries, making them more environmentally friendly.
